Postscript, 2018: I recall, but did not include in that original post some additional information about dangers down under. Do you remember that sign on the beach at the beginning of this post? It mentions crocodiles in the nearby sea. It also mentions something called a “marine stingers.” I was told while standing on that beach that one person who has been stung was in such pain that he was still screaming after he had been put to sleep! Just now (back in the present) I decided to do a little Google search and learn whether this had been an exaggeration, and I found out that the stinger sting is so powerful that sometimes it results in death.
